Sexualised bodies in the media: Angeline Jolie

I have just found out about Angelina Jolie carrying out a double masectomy and I felt inclined to comment on this topic because Angelina Jolie is a woman who has often found her body sexualised by the media because of the extent of her ultra-fame. Because this has occured, Angelina has put herself in a situation where she has greatly removed her breasts that have previously been a focus of her sex appeal and in the world of the media and is simultaneously seen as the reason for women's existence in the media. In today's world, if a women feels she has to excel and achieve fame, she puts out a sex tape or she poses in vulgar manners that show of the body as being the source of the woman's 'worth'. For Angelina to undergo masectomy, not only has she gone through emotional and physical pain that accompanies the act of surgery, she has also increased the media coverage of that topic. She has put herself out there to be criticised openly, to be put down and to be said that she is less of a women for purportedly removing what does make her a women. I think this is something that has to be applauded because of the strength that Angelina is exhibiting for going through something that would be torturous to many others. It is something to be respected in a person in her situation as she is revealing it purely for the sake of education to women who do not know that they are in the position to become victims of cancer. Angelina is a learned strong women who is throwing herself into the spotlight to bring about enlightenment to topics that are seen as taboo so props to Angelina for showing that a women is not a sum of physical part as she herself stated "I do not feel any less a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my feminity."
